WiMAX - wireless PCMCIA / ExpressCard roundup

Next to WiMAX wireless USB adapters, the WiMAX industry has released several WiMAX PCMCIA (Cardbus 2) and ExpressCard solutions. Here you find an overview of WiMAX cards available or about to be released in April 2009.

The benefit of ExpressCard technology over the previous PCMCIA CardBus PC card is an increase in bandwidth (speed). Additionally ExpressCard serve lower costs, better scalability, and better integration with motherboard chipset technology. The ExpressCard interface is not backwards-compatible with CardBus devices. However there are ExpressCard adapters for use with the older PCMCIA CardBus slots.

Although PCMCIA Cardbus / Expresscards have a more robust mechanical / electrical fit in a laptop, the WiMax wireless USB Adapters are more flexibility in terms of positioning the WiMax receiver. With a simple USB extension wire the WiMax USB adapter / Antenna can be positioned in a different spot (than the laptop) and can increase the chances on better WiMax reception & speed.

All cards are IEEE 802.16e compliant, according to the latest info available in April 2009.
